Piercy and Scott lead in Verona

Scott Piercy’s third-round 66 saw him take a share of the lead alongside Matt Kuchar at the Turning Stone Resort Champs.

Scott Piercy’s six-under-par third-round 66 saw him take a share of the lead on 14-under alongside Matt Kuchar at the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, New York.
Piercy and Kuchar – who was in a tie for second overnight – were a shot clear of second-placed pair Rod Pampling and Leif Olson who produced rounds of 65 and 68 respectively.
Australian Pampling had fired previous rounds of 69 to be in contention before today’s brilliant seven-under round which featured seven birdies – five of them on the front nine – and no bogeys.
Vaughn Taylor had held the half-way lead after two 67s but a 71 today left him in a four-way tie for sixth on 11 under.
Pampling admitted the improvement in conditions after two days of strong wind and rain had helped.
“I could actually swing away out there instead of trying to muscle through all the rain jackets et cetera and actually had nice temperatures as well, so it definitely helped.
“I’ve been driving, hitting a lot of good iron shots and making a lot of nice putts. In the first two days I guess I just had a few little bogeys and a double early, but today was nice. I didn’t really get into any trouble.
“I had a bit of trouble on 17 and made a good putt there to save par, but pretty much the whole day was really solid.”
Martin Laird of Scotland was among a large group in 15th with fellow Briton Justin Rose, of England, six-under and eight off the pace.
