Now Lefty’s on the slide

Long-time World No 2 Phil Mickelson has fallen out of the world’s top 10 for the first time since February 2004.
Long-time World No 2 Phil Mickelson has fallen out of the world’s top 10 for the first time since February 2004.
The popular California, who for most of the decade that Tiger Woods ruled the roost on the World Rankings list doggedly sat immediately behind in second place without ever being able to replace him, has now been edged out of the World’s top 10 and into 11th place by Webb Simpson.
The rankings promotion for the US PGA Tour’s late-season star will come as some compensation for the fact that he lost out to Luke Donald in the race for the PGA Tour’s Money list title when the Englishman swept through from 14th place and 5 shots back to win the Tour’s season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida on Sunday.
Simpson, who led at one stage during the final round, could not match Donald’s super-heated back nine finish and came away from the tournament in 6th place, but with enough points to climb past Mickelson into the top 10 on the rankings list
Donald, meanwhile, has stretched his lead over fellow Englishman Lee Westwood at the top of the rankings list to 3,27 points, while Sergio Garcia’s comprehensive 11-shot, home-town victory at the Castello Masters has taken the Spaniard from just inside the top 50 bubble at 49th to 31st.
Tiger Woods, once more inactive and not scheduled to play again until next months Australian Open, has meanwhile tumbled to 55th place on the rankings list.
