Colin Montgomerie is confident that a European player will be crowned Open champion at Royal St Georges next month.

Europe currently boast the top four players in the world rankings following Rory McIlroy’s record-breaking victory in the US Open at Congressional.

McIlroy is ranked third behind Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, and their Ryder Cup captain would not be surprised to see one of the members of his victorious 2010 team lift the Claret Jug.

“I believe it will be a European victory a The Open – one of the best five players. And that means Westwood, Donald, Kaymer, McDowell or McIlroy.”

Montgomerie also predicted a glittering future for McIlroy, adding: “He’s the best player through the hitting area that I’ve ever seen. A great talent.

“People have him as the new Tiger Woods already, I think that is a little bit early to say, but at the same time he has the potential to go that way.

“So we look forward to him participating and being in contention. If he is in contention at the Open, that will be fantastic.”
