George McNeill dropped three shots in his last two holes to slip into a four-way tie for the lead in Florida.
Justin Rose joined a four-way tie for the lead of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Florida, with Mathias Gronberg flying up the leaderboard to join him while George McNeill’s three dropped shots in the final two holes cost him the outright lead.
Swede Gronberg torched the Disney Magnolia Course at Lake Buena Vista with a third round of 66, six-under-par, putting him on 13-under for the tournament with a flawless card including five of his six birdies on the back nine.
That round boosted Gronberg up from eighth to a four-way tie for the lead heading into the final round, where he joined overnight leader Justin Leonard after he mixed four birdies with three bogeys for a one-under round of 71.
Englishman Rose bogeyed the 17th to drop to 13-under with a three-under round of 69, but that late slip was eclipsed by American McNeill, who should have held the outright lead after two eagles and a birdie on his first five holes after the turn.
“I felt back in the tournament like it was going to be us three guys fighting it out,” Rose said. “Then all of a sudden now we’re in a tournament where it’s a complete logjam.”
Standing on the 17th tee McNeill was clear on 16-under, but he bogeyed 17 and then double-bogeyed the last to join the other three players on 13-under going into Sunday’s final round.
“I can’t remember the last time I made two eagles in a round,” said McNeill, who won the 2007 Frys.com Open for his lone tour title.
“So I was pretty excited about those.”
Australia’s Nick O’Hern also had a great round as he carded a 66 to move up to 12-under and sit just a shot back of the leaders, where he is joined by Carl Pettersson after he went round just a shot worse off with a 67.
Will MacKenzie was also six-under for the day as his 66 moved him into seventh on his own on 11-under, with six men behind him, including Zach Johnson and Stephen Ames, on ten-under-par.
