Twenty-two-year-old Rory McIlroy now finds himself at a career-high third in the world rankings.
The new US Open champion from Northern Ireland has overtaken Martin Kaymer at the top of the list, after the German failed to finish in the top eight at the BMW International Open in Munich.
With Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood at Nos 1 and 2 respectively, it means for the first time since the Ranking were launched in 1986 that the top three spots have been occupied by United Kingdom golfers.
In the meantime, Fredrik Jacobson’s first win on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean at the US PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship in at TPC River Highlands at Cromwell in Connecticut on Sunday has hoisted the Swede from 110th on the World Ranking list to 61st
McIlroy is currently on an extended break following his first major win, and won’t be back in action until the 3rd major of 2011, The Open Championship at Sandwich in Kent on July 14 – 17,
Kaymer, on the other hand, will be back at next week’s French Open and Donald and Westwood at Castle Stuart near Inverness for the Scottish Open in two weeks’ time.
