Se Ri Pak and Suzann Pettersen will go into the third round of the LPGA State Farm Classic with a one-shot lead.
Korean Pak remained bogey-free for the tournament after the second day on the Panther Creek Country Club course, having carded 10 birdies throughout to keep a share of the lead, and will be in prime position to capture her first win in two years.
For her part, the 31-year-old Hall of Famer golfer Pak was self-effacing about her play so far.
“You miss here and there, it’s easy to make bogeys,” she said. “Golf is a pretty silly game.
“Of course, I got scores that [are] still really good. I was pretty lucky couple times. I still feel really great two for next two days.”
Co-leader Pettersen nearly didn’t even play, after starting the day feeling under the weather.
“I didn’t start too well,” she said. “I woke up and thought I wasn’t going to play. I have a slight flu coming. I was sitting in the fitness trailer for quite a while, trying to consider if I was going to play or not, thinking one week ahead. Our second major is just around the corner.”
Despite feeling ill and wary of the approaching the LPGA Championship is next week at Bulle Rock, the Norwegian rocketed up the leaderboard to claim her share of the lead with a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 – crediting her success on the day to her fitness.
“I love working out,” she said. “It’s not just something I do just because someone’s told me. For me it’s also about preventing injuries.
“For me, my fitness kind of builds on my swing. Finally my technique is allowing me to kind of get a use of the power I have in my body.”
The leading duo head into the third round just one shot ahead of five-person logjam that includes Young Lee, Moira Dunn, Kristy McPherson, Helen Alfredsson and Kris Tamulis.
Among those missing the cut were Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Brittany Lincicome and Hall of Famer Karrie Webb.
