Tom Lehman took a one-shot lead in the Mississippi Golf Resort Classic on Saturday after a course-record 64.

It was a low-scoring day all round, but Lehman excelled, his 8-under-par 64 good enough to break the course record set by Jeff Sluman just one day earlier by two shots.

Lehman saved the best for last, with his shot of the day coming on 18, a 45-foot chip-in from a greenside bunker for birdie.

“I had a perfect lie in the bunker and all kinds of green to work with, kind of down the hill to the hole,” he said. “It was one of the easiest bunker shots you’re ever going to get, and it went in.”

Despite his excellent performance, his second-round lead is a slender one. With so many players shooting low scores at Fallen Oak, the title is still very much up for grabs.

Lehman played in a final threesome alongside fellow American Jeff Sluman, who shot his second consecutive 66, and South African David Frost (67) that went round in a combined total of 19 under.

“It’s just fun,” said Lehman.

Sluman enjoyed the day as well.

“It was fun watching Tom on the back nine,” he said.

The wind is expected to pick up for Sunday’s final round, and some tougher pin placements are expected, so scoring might not be quite as low as Saturday.
