World number one Martin Kaymer has been working on his short game ahead of this week’s Malaysian Open.

Kaymer arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, where he’s set to participate in the Maybank Malaysian Open alongside fellow major holders Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen, and Rory McIlroy, who now has a major story of his own to tell – albeit without the happy ending he would have hoped for.

Despite missing the cut at Augusta, Kaymer is reasonably happy with the state of his game.

“Of course my record (at Augusta) has been not good. Some golf courses in the world really suit your irons and some they don’t and so there are some golf courses I struggle with,” he told Reuters.

“It’s a golf course where you have to draw the ball, I like to fade the ball and if you have that a lot of times on the golf course it makes it tougher.”

The German will leave any work on his swing for when he reunites with his coach, and has mostly been working on his skills on and around the greens since the Masters, which he felt needed some attention.

“I’m working a lot on my short game at the moment as there are big tournaments coming up now.

“I see my coach next week again so we might have to work on a few things with my swing and we will see what he comes up with but for the moment, and for myself, I just practise on my short game.”

While Kaymer had no joy at Augusta, former world number one Tiger Woods seemed to be showing signs of his old self. Asked if Woods had was starting to turn things around Kaymer replied, “I hope so.”

“It would be great for golf. I thought about it before. I think he is coming back earlier than a lot of people thought and that was obviously the first proof that he is getting close.”

Kaymer and Louis Oosthuizen delayed their flight to Kuala Lumpur to watch Sunday’s drama unfold.

“I feel OK, I slept fairly well last night, obviously it’s a 12-hour time difference from Atlanta, but I feel OK.”
