Padraig Harrington has won the Irish PGA Championship for the third straight time, this one at the European Club in Brittas Bay.

The Irish star closed with a 1-over 72 on Saturday for a seven-shot win over former British Amateur champion Brian McElhinney.

His victory, which ended the dismal run of missed cuts and poor results he has had since his third major triumph at the PGA Championship last year, has come in the week before his defence of The Open at Turnberry – and has his supporters wondering if its another good omen

Harrington has, in recent years, preferred to play the Irish PGA, which is not sanctioned by any of the major tours, to prepare himself for links golf, which he will certainly face at Turnberry.

He won the Irish event in both in 2007 and 2008 and on each occasion went on to the win the Open

Can Harrington, who has missed the cut in his last five tournaments, do it for a third time.
