The 24-year-old hit five birdies without dropping a shot at Phoenix Country Club to move onto nine under 133 for the tournament.
South Korean Kim Do-hoon stormed up the leaderboard into second place following a seven-under 64 while defending champion Edoardo Molinari was five shots behind Ikeda in a share of fifth after signing for a 68. Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, the runner-up last year, is a further shot back.
Ryo Ishikawa, seeking to top the Japan Tour money list for the second year in a row, improved slightly following his disappointing opening round of 75 with a 70 created in a see-saw round with four birdies against a bogey and a double bogey.
The 19-year-old, who is is tied for 49th at three over in a group that includes American veteran Tom Watson (74) and Australian star Robert Allenby (71), won his third Japan Tour title this season last weekend and is now seeking to wrap up his second successive Japan Tour Money List crown in this and the last two events that remain on the Tour schedule this year.
