Hunter Mahan

USA
Prior to this season the 28-year-old from the OC (Orange County) was blessed with being rated one of America’s finest prospects, but also cursed with a reputation for being one of the PGA Tour’s biggest under-achievers (he had just one win to show for all his promise). But late in 2009 he fell in love with a Texan cheerleader and he credits love with helping him claim two wins in 2010. The first victory was good (the Phoenix Open in February) but the second has the potential to take his career up a notch because it came against an elite field in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Mahan made his Ryder Cup debut in the American victory of 2008 and he was impressive. Not only was he unbeaten but captain Paul Azinger played him at every possible opportunity as he racked up two wins and three halves. Two solid President’s Cup appearances (in 2007 and 2009) makes him used to the rigours of team golf so initially, at least, he looks sure to be deemed one of America’s safest, and strongest, performers.
