Graeme McDowell surged through the field to take the lead midway through the second round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City.

Starting the day two shots adrift at the Gary Player Country Club, two front nine birdies and three more after the turn saw him edge clear of the rest of the 12-man field.

The former US Open champion from Northern Ireland birdied the first and ninth holes for an outward 34 and then picked up three more strokes at the 10th, 11th and 13th – the latter coming from a chip-in from off the green – to reach seven under par.

That was one shot clear of Sweden’s Robert Karlsson and two clear of England’s Lee Westwood, Germany’s Martin Kaymer and American Jason Dufner.

Korean Kyung-Tae Kim was at four under, while joint overnight leader Charl Schwartzel fell to three under par after a double bogey at the eighth to lie alongside Luke Donald and Anders Hansen.

Simon Dyson and Darren Clarke were tied on two under and Francesco Molinari was in last place, five over for his round, and the tournament, through 16 holes.
