Fowler: ‘I loved playing links golf”

Rickie Fowler said he had relished his first experience of being in contention for a major title at the Open Championship.

He had also relished playing links golf.

The American young gun outshone fellow 22-year-old Rory McIlroy to earn a top-five finish at Royal St George’s, where he adapted to links golf in impressive fashion.

Fowler reeled off 13 straight pars on the final day to stay within touch of the lead, but a bogey at the par-five 14th effectively ended his challenge.

“I haven’t really been in contention in a Major yet, so to do that here playing links golf was something I really enjoyed.

” I am obviously pleased with where my game is right now and looking forward to getting on with the rest of the year.

“I love playing links golf because I’m able to kind of show a little bit of my game and hit some shots around the course that I don’t get to hit in the States a whole lot.

“It’s fun for me to be able to use my imagination and play the game a little bit differently and how it’s meant to be played over here,” he said.
