Spaniard Maria Hernandez claimed her maiden victory on the European Tour on Sunday.

Spaniard Maria Hernandez claimed her maiden victory on the European Tour after pipping Kristie Smith to win the Ladies Slovak Open on Sunday.
Hernandez, competing in just her second event as a professional, finished at eight under par after birdies on the last two holes gave her a two-under 70, which proved enough to see off Australian Smith by a shot.
“I had to finish strong and make a birdie on each of the last couple of holes. I knew I could do it because I was playing pretty good, but the putts weren’t falling in,” said 24-year-old Hernandez.
“It means so much. I was playing good but I wasn’t scoring well the whole year.
“I was struggling a lot with my putter but this week and after the second round my putter started working and it means everything because I was a little bit down, thinking, ‘maybe I cannot make it as a professional.
Veteran Englishwoman Laura Davies came third, a further shot behind.
