Shanshan Feng shot an eight-under-par 64 to establish a one-shot lead after the first round of the LPGA State Farm Classic in Springfield, Illinois.
The Chinese player picked up five birdies on the front nine, including three in her first four holes, and three more on the back nine to finish the day ahead of Juli Inkster and Na Yeon Choi at Panther Creek Country Club.
American Inkster and South Korean Na both carded 65s, Inkster recovering from a double bogey at the third to pick up six consecutive birdies from seven to 12 before finishing with three more on the trot.
Na helped herself to seven birdies without dropping a shot.
Five players including the South Korean trio of Meena Lee, Song-Hee Kim and MJ Hur, Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Canada’s Alena Sharp, lay one stroke further back on six under.
The English pair of Karen Stupples and Laura Davies were the highest-placed Britons on the leaderboard. They were two of 13 players on four under to lie joint 16th.
Catriona Matthew of Scotland, though, could only manage a one-under 71 and lay in a tie for 69th.
