Els-caddie split is temporary

Ernie Els will not have long-time caddie Ricci Roberts carrying his bag at this week’s WGC-American Express Championship at the Grove.
Ernie Els will not have long-time caddie Ricci Roberts carrying his bag at this week’s WGC-American Express Championship at the Grove.
But the big South African has denied that the two have split because of differences that have developed over the big South African’s continuing run of poor results since his knee operation late last year.
A British newspaper spoke this week of a parting of the ways between Els and Roberts after more than a decade, but Els insists that they are merely taking a short break from each other.
Els, has taken on Sam Torrance’s veteran long-time bagman Malcolm Mason this week at the Grove, but according to his management company spokesman Mark Bell, ‘The Big Easy’ was “particularly insistent on pointing out that the short split with Ricci, which may only be for a month, is borne out of friendship and nothing else.
“It’s true that Ernie’s looking to re-light his fire and he obviously wants to crank it up again as far as his results are concerned, but it’s an amicable break,” Bell told Reuters, adding that Roberts would be back beside Els for the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City at the end of November.
