‘Such a cool way to end a great season’ – Rory McIlroy reacts to equaling Tiger Woods achievement

Rory McIlroy equals Tiger Woods record of two FedEx Cups

Rory McIlroy will be enjoying his bank holiday Monday after pocketing an astonishing $15million from winning his second FedEx Cup, and in the process doing something that only Tiger Woods has done before.

The Northern Irishman was outspoken in his criticism of the size of the prize on offer before the tournament, especially given the new format which allowed the best performing players in qualifying a head start.

However, despite starting shots behind leader Justin Thomas, who finished third, McIlroy was able to perform a stunning few days of golf to take home the title.

“My goal today was to go and shoot the lowest score of the week,” McIlroy, who ended four strokes ahead of second-placed Xander Schauffele said.

“It’s been such a cool way to end what has been for me a great season.”

McIlroy became only the second player after Tiger Woods to ever win the FedEx Cup twice, and he admits that has made it even more special.

“To win the FedEx Cup on multiple occasions is a pretty big deal,” McIlroy added.

“Any time you can do something which only Tiger Woods has done, you know you’re doing something right.

“Three wins, another FedEx Cup, a Players Championship, which I’ve never won before, this season is right up there with one of the best I’ve played.

“People will maybe look and say I haven’t won any majors this year, but I feel like I’ve played some of the best golf of my career so I will rate this 2019 season very highly.”

McIlroy, who last year had to endure the walk alongside a victorious Woods as the heaving gallery chanted, “Tiger, Tiger,” particularly enjoyed his walk up to the 18th green this time around.

“I must say I didn’t enjoy that walk last year like everyone else did,” McIlroy said. “I never took the fight to Tiger.

“It’s amazing how different things can be in a year.”
