Euro Tour mulls schedule change
The European Tour are contemplating changes to the Race to Dubai Final Series following criticism from Ernie Els.
The South African on Monday voiced his disapproval of a Tour regulation that requires golfers to play in atleast two of the three events in the Final Series in order to be eligible to tee off at the DP World Tour Championship.
The four-time major winner is unable to play at this weekend’s Turkish Airlines Open and will therefore miss out on a place in the lucrative season finale in Dubai.
Chief Operating Officer and director of international policy for the European Tour, Keith Waters, however, hinted that Els’ comments would be considered when the 2014 schedule is considered.
“The Final Series is a concept which was initiated through discussions with the membership of The European Tour,” Waters said via a press release.
“Their input will continue to be important as The Final Series evolves and moves forward; details of which chief executive George O’Grady will look to unveil on the final Sunday of this year’s DP World Tour Championship.
“The current Race to Dubai is building to a thrilling conclusion and, with two huge prize funds still to contest, there are over 60 players still with the opportunity of finishing number one for the 2013 season.
“Top-five finishes from Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose last week in China saw them all close the gap on current leader Henrik Stenson.
“We now look ahead to the penultimate tournament of The Final Series this week in Turkey and the season finale next week in Dubai.”
Els chose to play on the PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic instead of the first event in the final series – the BMW Masters – but finished 11th at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai on Sunday.
