Inside Adam Scott’s latest equipment changes including a bold 9-wood switch

Adam Scott changed to Miura KM-700 irons for the FedEx St. Jude Classic, the first leg of the 2024 FedExCup Playoffs in Memphis, but the change was one that was short lived.

These irons are designed to provide greater bounce than Scott’s usual irons.

He reasoned that on TPC Southwind’s sticky Zoysia grass, the greater bounce sole design would enhance his turf connection.

But Scott was placed just 53rd out of 70 players in Strokes Gained: Approach, although he finished a solid T18 for the week.

He wanted to go back to what was already effective, a pair of wide-soled, low-bounce Miura AS-1 prototype blades that he had used to finish second at the Genesis Scottish Open earlier in the summer and T10 at The Open Championship, after his comparatively disappointing performance with the KM-700 irons.

So Scott is reverting to the equipment that served him well in Scotland when he takes part in the BMW Championship.

Bentgrass and Poa Annua are blended to create the tee boxes and fairways at Castle Pines Golf Club, while fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass make up the rough.

But Scott was determined to return to his trusty blade irons regardless of the condition of the grass.

It’s interesting to note that Muirfield Village Golf Club, another Jack Nicklaus creation, and Castle Pines share comparable grass types.

Scott enjoyed his first outing with the Miura AS-1 blade irons at the Workday-sponsored 2022 Memorial Tournament held at Muirfield Village.

Now it seems that he has sought to come full circle in his pursuit of short game excellence.

9-wood switch for Colorado altitude

He has also made another more unconventional change as he bids to enhance his distance control at altitude in this week’s BMW Championship in Colorado.

Even with the greatest golfers in the world, Castle Pines’ elevation of almost 6,200 feet above sea level makes distance control extremely difficult.

In place of a 3-iron, Scott’s TaylorMade Qi10 9-wood contributes to increased launch and spin.

Players have to take precautions to avoid their golf ball entering greens with an excessively shallow landing angle and going right through the green since it is travelling a greater distance than it would at sea level.

Scott’s 9-wood, which has enhanced launch and a rapid spin rate, will both assist cut through the thick Kentucky bluegrass rough and also cushion the landing.

The changes underline Scott’s status as a PGA TOUR professional who is always striving to get the most out of his gear and tailor his game with different clubs.
