Gel have based their new putters on the technology employed by Yes! Golf on the faces of putters as used by Retief Goosen and David Howell, which has been scientifically proved to grip the ball at impact and help generate better topspin – but with a difference.
GEL have used horizontal grooves instead of the C grooves of their rival’s putters.
“The innovation of the groove putter by putting guru, Harold Swash, has been a golfing revelation in the 21st century and now GEL has introduced horizontal, precision-cut aluminium grooves as opposed to C-grooves to generate even better topspin roll,” said Tim Orgill, the Sales and Marketing Director of GEL Golf at the launch.
“We consulted numerous tour professionals which resulted in designing the GEL putters with larger, heavier and more balanced heads, encouraging an even smoother and more rhythmical putting stroke.”
Dr Paul Hurrion of Quintic, an independent equipment testing consultant, reinforced the claims for grooved putters when he explained how exhaustive laboratory testing has proved that grooved putter faces produce greater grip with the golf ball at the moment of impact which in turn enhanced a putter’s ability to produce the desired topspin roll on the ball.
Hurrion also showed how the GEL putters outperformed a number of top competitive brands on the market.
In addition to promoting the GEL Putter, GEL says it is keen to publicise grooved putters in general and make sure people know what they do and how they work.
“Given the number of strokes that putting can add to a round of golf, and the beneficial effect that grooves can have on a player’s putting, I am confident that the potential for grooved putters is enormous,” Orgill concluded.
The GEL range of putters are all built from 431 stainless steel with a Black Nickel finish and have an aluminium putter face insert, which is softer and more responsive than the stainless steel face inserts of other groove putters.
Of the six models in the GEL putter range, the Diamond, Emerald, Jade, Opal, Ruby and Sapphire, two are available in ladies models and three for left handers
Clearly made to be eye-catching, they come with bright blue and yellow WINN grips for men and blue and pink for ladies with face inserts that are also coloured blue and pink respectively.
The model’s specifications
– Ruby Model – Traditional toe-heavy, blade putter. Head weighs 360g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 71°.
– Diamond Model – Mallet style head enables easy putt alignment. Head weighs 360g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 71°. Available right and left-handed.
– Opal Model – Centre-shafted putter with weight distributed evenly for great feel. Head weighs 360g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 74°.
– Emerald Model – Blade putter with back-weighted head that is heavier than standard and enables easy putt alignment. Head weighs 400g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 72°. Available right and left-handed and in ladies model.
– Sapphire Model – Over-sized mallet head helps with alignment, and perimeter-weighted head is heavier to give golfers a more confident roll. Head weighs 400g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 71°. Available right and left-handed and in ladies model.
– Jade Model – Traditional face-balanced blade putter. Head weighs 360g with standard loft of 2° and standard lie of 72°.
The putters are expected to be priced in the vicinity of £100.
