Five must-play courses in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico’s golfing mecca
The PGA Tour returns to Mexico next week for the annual running of the World Wide Technology Championship.
The tournament takes place in Cabo San Lucas which – on top of being a popular holiday destination for North Americans and those from further afield – has become a golfing mecca.
Few locations offer quite the concentration of world-class courses as Cabo San Lucas with more than 18 within the city.
Cabo San Lucas is a place you go if you’re keen on a very golf-heavy holiday.
This list is far from exhaustive as Cabo really has too many courses to adequately cover in concise fashion.
But here are five highly-rated courses that you can play there.
Questro Golf
With three top-notch golf courses, Questro Golf has emerged as one of Los Cabos’ premier golf destinations. Their championship golf courses, which were created by golfing legends Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Robert Trent Jones II will transport you on an amazing tour across the Baja Peninsula’s breathtaking scenery.
You’ll be treated to stunning vistas of the ocean as you navigate across the picturesque Baja desert, which is framed by the imposing Sierra Madre mountains.
Questro has no handicap or age requirement but asks that all players maintain an appropriate pace of play.
Cabo Del Sol Golf Club
The club is home to two courses with the public access Cabo Del Sol course sharing a property with the private Cove Club Course.
The stunning Baja landscape is the backdrop against which the Cabo Del Sol Course (previously known as the Desert Course) was skillfully created around. Since it opened in 2001, golfers have been in awe of its seamless blend of desert and ocean, with canyon-like arroyos that add both to the challenge of the course and the aesthetics.
With views of the ocean from every hole in the course, the Cabo Del Sol Course is a unique feature of the golf experience in the resort town. Its dramatic bunkering and varied elevation changes provide a stunning background for your play.
Club Campestre San Jose
Club Campestre San Jose, created by the world-renowned Jack Nicklaus Signature company, features 18 championship-style holes.
Club Campestre San José invites visitors to enjoy the stunning panoramic views, dramatic elevation changes, and undulating championship greens of a first-rate Mexico golf club, with spectacular vistas of the Sea of Cortez, canyons, and mountains. This unique Mexican golf course, hidden in the Sierra foothills and offering spectacular ocean vistas from every hole, was designed with exquisite precision and demanding elegance.
Club Campestre is the first course to employ the saltwater-resistant “Paspalum” grass, which means it is easier to maintain at local latitudes and in local desert conditions.
Palmilla Golf Club
Palmilla Golf Club in Los Cabos, Mexico is famed for its 27 holes of outstanding golf and breathtaking views. It is known as the “Grand Dame of Los Cabos Golf” for a very good reason.
The first Jack Nicklaus Signature design in Latin America, the golf course is both beautiful and tough. It is a world-class masterpiece of a course that compares to the best courses on the international stage.
From all 27 holes on this Cabo golf course, you can see the Sea of Cortez.
Cabo Real Golf Course
Cabo Real Golf Club, the centrepiece of a 2,800-acre resort and residential development with 3.2 miles of coastline, offers a multi-themed, target-style course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Cabo Real’s front nine, which Jones fully redesigned from a previous course, offers a gorgeous, soft challenge with vast fairways falling down to the Sea of Cortes. The short par-4 fifth, which plays across an arroyo on route to the shore, is a stunning example of its blend of beauty and challenge.
Cabo Real’s lengthy back nine is a terrific test of golf, with stunning holes carved into desert slopes at the foot of steep mountain peaks. The free-form bunkers and short, raised greens mix with fairways that play along ridge tops and make the most of the rugged terrain.
