El Camaleón Golf Club

The El Camaleón Golf Club, which this week hosts the OHL Classic, can boast of a truly spectacular course which winds its way through tropical jungle and mangrove swamps before reaching out to sand and sea.
It can also lay claim to being the site of the first official PGA Tour event to be held in Mexico and the first to be staged outside of North America; this in 2009.
El Camaleón is aptly named.
A Greg Norman masterpiece, It’s diverse layout and ever-changing landscape snakes through tropical jungles, dense mangroves and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bordered by massive limestone canals.
It’s indigenous and environmentally inspired design aspects are evident from the opening fairway which is the site of an imposing cenote, an ancient underground cavern that was unearthed during the initial stages of course construction.
El Camaleón is the only course in the Riviera Maya region featuring holes that are just a step away from the brilliantly-blue Caribbean Sea.
Every one of the 18 holes on this 7,024-yard, par-72 course shines with its own special magic, but it’s the par-3s that really catch the eye.
The short 15th truly defines the El Camaleón experience. At only 160 yards from the back marker the hole plays directly towards the vibrant waters of the Caribbean.
The large green sets the stage for a memorable shot as the nearby waves gently lap around it. But don’t be fooled. This hole is not to be taken lightly, especially when the tropical winds pick up.
But no matter whether your score there is good or bad, don’t fret. The stunning ocean view will remain with you long after you have played your round.
The 7th hole also takes you to the very edge of the Caribbean Sea which in the distance will give you a view of one of the world’s largest coral reefs and the island of Cozumel.
And the 10th is another short hole that will live long on your memory
Its figure-eight green is lined with potential drama.
Hit your approach too long or to far right and you will see your ball swallowed up by the crystal waters of one of the canals in the resort’s one-of-a-kind canal system which, among other things, enables golfers to step out of their rooms onto thatch-roofed boats which whisk them away to the first tee.
El Camaleón is located 45 minutes south of Cancun in the heart of the mystic Riviera Maya and just minutes from the dynamic beach destination of Playa del Carmen,
The golf course is the centerpiece of the luxury resort development of Mayakoba which includes a 401-room deluxe hotel, The Fairmont Mayakoba.
