Is this the most beautiful finishing stretch in Europe? Discover Golfclub am Mondsee in Austria’s stunning Salzburg

Earlier this month, the DP World Tour made a visit to Salzburg for the Austrian Alpine Open at Gut Altentann GC.

It was a first return to Austria for the circuit in four years and the course was a picturesque one.

But the most beautiful golf course in Salzburgerland was actually just up the road and its final four holes might just be up there with the most beautiful closing stretch anywhere in Continental Europe.

Of course, Salzburgerland is known for being enchanting and providing sensational views.

The city of Salzburg was the birthplace of Mozart and it inspired all his best work.

The hills and mountains around the city were used as filming locations for The Sound of Music.

And Hohenwerfen Castle, just south of the city, is better known to movie fans as Schloss Adler in the World War 2 adventure Where Eagles Dare.

Put simply, wherever you go in Salzburgerland, the Alps provide a great stage or a magnificent backdrop.

If you travel to the wonderful Alpine town of St Wolfgang and take the cog railway to the peak of Schafberg, it will provide views across the mountain tops but also down towards as many as 11 lakes.

One of those is Mondsee and beside it, a golfer can spot the tell-tale signs of a course – the holes that thread their way between the trees.

Travel down to the course and the views are no less fantastic.

The front nine is nice. It’s very nice, in fact.

So is the back nine, with every hole featuring views of the mountain tops.

But the walk from the 14th green to the 15th tee introduces you to a staggering stretch of four holes that cannot fail to make you smile.

The 15th is a par-3 with a carry over a lake of icy blue glacial water. It’s good from the tee and even better looking back at the tee from the green:

The view of the 15th from the 16th fairway is pretty good too:

The 16th is a short par-4 that is as tight as tight can be. You only have to miss the fairway by a yard or two and you’ll have to chip out to find an angle to another green perched on the edge of the lake.

It has a majestic backdrop:

And the view of the clubhouse is pretty good too.

A short walk takes you to the 17th tee, another par-3 and this one heads towards Lake Mondsee itself. If 16 felt a little like a hole at Harbour Town moved to the Alps, this feels more like Loch Lomond:

And then there is the final hole, the par-5 18th. It curves around the lake and then finishes with another green protected by water, long and left.

The golfers in front of us were Italian and they were still hanging around. “Bellisima!” said one, shaking his head in wonder. “Bellisima!”

And then we retired to the clubhouse, which, of course, had its own great views.

And you see that highest peak in the distance? That’s Schafberg. Beat that.
