Stanley wins Quicken Loans in playoff
American Kyle Stanley claimed a first PGA Tour win in five years on Sunday after defeating Charles Howell III in a playoff to win at the Quicken Loans National.
The duo started the final day four shots off the lead but both shot four-under par rounds of 66 in Maryland to finish tied for the lead at seven under par.
At the first extra hole, Stanley was victorious after he got up and down from off the 18th green for his first PGA victory since the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Rickie Fowler boosted his finishing position with a nine-birdie round of 65 to finish tied for third place with Scotland’s Martin Laird, while 54-hole leader David Lingmerth of Sweden slipped into a tie for fifth place with seven other players at four under par after a disappointing final round of three over 73.
Fowler was temporarily in contention after four straight birdies starting on the seventh before a double bogey on the 14th after he found water off the tee put paid to his chances.
Earlier, Howell had almost grabbed victory outright on the final hole when his 20-foot putt on the final green missed by an inch.
The win sees Stanley earn one of four qualification spots for The British Open later this month, with the other three spots for Royal Birkdale going to Howell III, Laird and Sung Kang.
