Yang's stunning victory in last year's PGA Championship was the greatest golfing achievement of 2009. Not only did he become the first male Asian winner of a major championship, but he also became the first player to defeat Tiger Woods in a major championship when the great man was holding the 54-hole lead. Yang seemed oblivious to the weight of history on his shoulders as he indulged in a thrilling battle of thrust and counter thrust with Woods down the stretch. And after unleashing a magnificent approach to the final hole, and then putting out for victory, he memorably lifted his golf bag aloft in celebration. Earlier this year he proved he has the mettle for major golf when finished eighth in the Masters, and he followed that effort with a win the following week in the China Open. Since then however he has failed to finish in the top 20. He did begin the Open Championship with a round of 67, but his form throws doubt on his chances of a successful defence.
