The South African has a superb record in the US Open (including two wins) and remarkably consistent records in both the Masters and Open Championship. But, in comparison, his efforts in the final major of the year have been pitiful: he was sixth at Baltusrol in 2005 but in his other 12 starts he has never once finished better than 23rd. It is a curious pattern and not one that is immediately explicable because the qualities that make him such a strong contender in the other majors ought to be equally valuable in the fourth. His 2010 season was disrupted by two injuries - a broken toe and an injured hand - which saw him miss a big chunk of action during the early summer. It was a pity because he was rediscovering his solid form. Since returning to action he has been a little up and down. He was fifth in the Travelers Championship, missed the cut in the Scottish Open, was sixth in the Open, 59th in the Canadian Open and then third in the Bridgestone Invitational.
