Harrington became the first European to win back-to-back major championships when he prevailed at Oakland Hills last year and the first European to win the Wanamaker Trophy since Scotland's Tommy Armour in 1930. At that point the Dubliner was the form player in world golf and there was even talk of him completing a 'Paddy Slam' in 2009. But despite his success Harrington has never been one to rest on his laurels and, feeling that he had to continue to improve, undertook a process of swing rebuilding. Unfortunately, and perhaps predictably, results did not follow and after finishing 35th at Augusta his form tailed off completely as he missed five cuts in six events, including the US Open championship at Bethpage Black. He did get back to winning ways by triumphing at the Irish PGA Championship, just as he did in 2007 and 2008, but unlike in those years he was unable to follow it with victory at the Open Championship as he surrendered his grip on the Claret Jug by finishing well down the field in 65th at Turnberry. However, the 37-year-old finally indicated that his hard work away from the course could be about to pay dividends on it with a much-improved display at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week. He led for the opening three rounds before eventually settling for a share of second after pushing Tiger Woods all the way in a memorable final round duel. In all likelihood an in-form Tiger will once again be the man he has to overcome at Hazeltine if he is to successfully defend his USPGA crown, but his form and mood at Firestone suggest he might be ready to do just that.
