Even in the best of circumstances Phil Mickelson is an enigma, but unfortunately for him, his present circumstances are anything but the best. It was bad enough to discover that his wife Amy was diagnosed with cancer, but weeks later it emerged that his mother was also suffering from the disease. Given such incredible mental strain his effort in the US Open - when he promised to set an unattainable target during the final round - was remarkable. But, on the other hand, the fact that he clearly suffered in the face of the emotional rollercoaster of near-success highlights the difficulties he will face again if he goes close this week at Hazeltine. He returned to the PGA Tour at Firestone last week and was predictably rusty. Mickelson is undoubtedly talented enough to win this event and he has proved as much - winning at Baltusrol and making the top ten in five of his last nine starts in the fourth major. But he surely faces off-the-course strains that will overwhelm any opportunity he has to claim the title.
