Six years ago a sparkling third round of 67 gave Mickelson every opportunity of challenging for the PGA title at Whistling Straits, but ultimately he could not maintain the pace and Vijay Singh took the honours. Mickelson had to wait another 12 months before finally getting his hands on the final major of the year. He has a consistent record in it - in addition to that one win he has finished second and third, adding another five top 10s. His form this year has been a little peculiar. Traditionally a fast starter in his home state of California, he did nothing of note yet still claimed the Masters green jacket in impressive style in April. Since then he has finished fourth in the US Open and fifth in the Memorial, but he has never appeared to be in any great form. Unsurprisingly he did very little in the Open Championship, but we can expect a stronger showing this week. Whether he can contend for a second title will probably depend on his putting. When he's been good this year he has finished top five; he just hasn't putted well very often and he seems increasingly distracted by the possibility of becoming the world number one.
