Goosen has a very consistent record in the Open Championship - but it is also damned by being relatively free of years when he has been genuinely close to winning. In 15 starts he has seven top-10 finishes and a total of 10 top-25s. But his best finish is actually no better than fifth - at St Andrews in 2005 and last year at Turnberry. So much is in his favour - a calm demeanour, the ability to play well in wind, a love of quick greens. But perhaps he lacks the extra special ingredient needed to win. Or perhaps he just hasn't had the good fortune required to hold aloft the Claret Jug. His consistent 2010 season was disrupted by two injuries after the Masters in April but his fifth-place finish at the Travelers Championship hints that he is back to the form that saw him begin the year with six top-10 finishes in just eight starts. The stats say he will be there or thereabouts - but maybe not the winner.
