If the Open Championship galleries were allowed to pick a winner, they'd select Sergio. No golfer since his compatriot Seve Ballesteros has built such a rapport with them. Three years ago at Royal Liverpool Sergio surged through the field on the Saturday afternoon - a thrilling round of 65 sweeping him into second place behind Tiger Woods. At every point Garcia interacted with his fans, pumping his fist, talking to them, making eye contact, drawing on their energy. The dunes were alive with Sergio-mania. But the next day, paired with Woods, Garcia was as flat as he had previously been explosive. Twelve months later he began the Open with a 65, led by three going into the final round, but was caught on the line by Padraig Harrington and lost in a play-off. Those two years typify Sergio's relationship with the Open; brilliant one day, tragic the next. His top ten finish at the recent US Open was the first sign of real form in 2009 and if he is to win a major it will surely be an Open. There's always a "but" with Sergio however ...
