The annual Open debate is: will the course suit Tiger? Turnberry's course manager Euan Grant was working at St Andrew's in 2005 and offers the fascinating insight that Woods was the only player in the field with the skills and nerve to hit the ball hard enough and high enough to attack the flags there. As impressive as that effort was, the challenge at Turnberry will be very different because the Ailsa course lacks the humps and bumps which kick balls off-line. Will that play into Tiger's hands or will it allow an in-form player to go low? And if the wind blows will Tiger get the luck of the draw or be forced onto the back foot? The other big issue is his form: imperious when converting winning opportunities at the Memorial and his own AT&T National yet curiously off-colour during the US Open in between. Both his last two wins have come on the same day that his close friend Roger Federer won majors - and Woods is well aware that those victories give the Swiss man a 15-14 grand slam total advantage. Do not be surprised if that deficit motivates him in Scotland.
