When Anthony Kim arrived in England for last year's Open Championship he was big news. Having promised much as the "Next Big Thing" he had proved he had game by winning twice on the PGA Tour - not just any old titles, but good wins against top fields on tough courses (at Quail Hollow and Congressional). But a young American, with a high ball-flight, playing links golf for the first time - it had, sage observers insisted, to be a learning curve for him. Whatever. He hit more greens in regulation than anyone else in the field and if he had holed a few putts (his Total Putting rank was the worst of all those who made the cut) he might even have won. As it was he finished seventh. It was proof that he didn't just have a good swing; he also had hunger, desire and a good golfing brain. 2009 has been a massive disappointment after his breakthrough year, but he is getting better by the week - literally. His current form reads: MC-54-16-11-3. If he can learn to putt on links greens, he might have a chance.
