According to conventional wisdom, this is the major that Luke Donald is most likely to win because his qualities - straight from the tee, calm and unruffled - are those most required by the courses and conditions set up by the USGA. Indeed, at the recent BMW PGA Championship Rory McIlroy described Donald as "the most patient golfer in the world". On the other hand that same event proved that the apparently Zen-like Donald still has issues at the sharp end of a tournament - his double-bogey seven on the penultimate hole was not the first time he has limped home when in contention. However, he bounced back in style by winning the Madrid Masters seven days later and he followed that with third place in the Wales Open, his fourth top three in his last five starts. He is undoubtedly in form but his US Open results belie the notion that he is a perfect fit for the event. In five starts he has a best finish of 12th at Winged Foot.
