Goosen has proved a master when it comes to conquering the brutally tough examination which is a US Open. Wins in the event in 2001 and 2004 marked him down as a man to always be respected when the course runs hard, the greens are lightning fast and the patience of a saint is required. The big question though is whether Goosen is the player he was earlier in the decade. In terms of consistency the answer is no and he's actually missed his last two cuts to cast more doubts. But the impossibly calm South African hasn't forgotten the winning habit. Back in January he won the Africa Open on his native Sunshine Tour and, after a third at Pebble Beach, proved he could still win on the US Tour by landing the Transitions Championship in Florida. The 79-75 he shot at Bethpage Black in 2002 swings the balance back in favour of those who don't think he's a factor this week but, remember, he was defending champion that year and that carries all sorts of extra stresses. A third title is not out of the question.
