A four-time PGA Tour winner in the last 12 months, the Wisconsin man has to be deemed a big threat at Pebble Beach, not least because he succeeds on ball-strikers' golf courses, as evidenced by his latest victory at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera earlier this year. His career has had more ups and downs than a rollercoaster but in the last four years he has been solid enough to climb into the world's top five - and he is there on merit. A straight driver and one of the finest wedge players in the world, he has the game to do well in the US Open and has proved as much with three top-six finishes. The 43-year-old may have limited chances to grab a major and this week is undoubtedly one of them. There are, however, a few concerns. One is his putter which can be cold as well as hot. Another is the suspicion that he gets a little twitchy near the winning line. He finished 17th at the Memorial, a return to form after a disappointing spring.
