The Florida-resident with the helicopter swing is the identikit US Open specialist: a short and straight long-game, a solid short-game, fearless on fast greens and unflappable when the going gets tough. He won the event in 2003 at Olympia Fields and was runner-up in 2006 at Winged Foot and in 2007 at Oakmont so the theory of his compatibility has stood up to the test. On the other hand it is nearly two years since his last win on Tour (the 2007 Canadian Open) but this year has seen a return to consistent ways with six top ten finishes from just 12 starts, including, most recently, second place behind Tiger Woods at the Memorial. His stats in that event suggest he is primed for this week: first for Driving Accuracy, ninth for Greens in Regulation and second for Putting Average. He'll need to forget his last visit to Bethpage however. In 2002 he shot a second round 80 to miss the cut - the only time he has failed to play the weekend in 14 US Open starts.
