If you were to construct the ideal US Open contender he might end up looking like Jim Furyk: straight from tee to green, solid scrambler, a good putter on fast greens, indefatigable in demeanour and cunning with his course strategy. The results concur with this: in his last 14 starts in the event he boasts one win, two runners-up finishes and another two top-fives. He's also got plenty of experience at Pebble Beach thanks to the AT&T National Pro-am (indeed he has four times finished in the top six). And just to complete the rosy picture he is a double winner in 2010 having claimed the Transitions Championship at Westin Innsbruck (on super-fast greens) and the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town. In the last month he has also finished seventh at Quail Hollow and 10th at Muirfield Village - both tough tracks against quality fields. Furyk is in great form and loves the event so he just has to be considered a contender. Also holds the record low score for a US Open in winning the 2003 event.
