Brash, extrovert and not afraid to court controversy, for a long time Poulter seemed defined more by his character and clothing than his exploits on the golf course. But there are signs the Englishman is now fulfilling his obvious talent with his second-place finish at the Open Championship last year appearing to be a turning point. That performance confirmed that Poulter could challenge for the game's biggest prizes as for too long he had promised much at majors only to fall away as the week wore on. Emerging as Europe's stand-out performer in the disappointing Ryder Cup defeat at Valhalla last September further enhanced his reputation on the big stage and the 33-year-old has delivered some encouraging performances on the PGA Tour this season. He already has four top-10 finishes to his name, including the runner-up spot at the Players Championship in May, and put in a solid display to finish tied for 20th at Augusta. His best finish at the US Open came in 2006 when he was 12th at Winged Foot, but he departed under something of a cloud at Torrey Pines 12 months ago when he withdrew with an unspecified injury having endured a nightmare run during the back nine of his second round.
