Westwood produced his best-ever major finish at last year's US Open when he pushed the leaders all the way before finishing on his own in third - just a missed putt on the 72nd green away from forcing himself into the play-off between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. Indeed his game seems suited to the tough test that is the US Open with top-ten finishes also in 1998 and 2000. Long off the tee and accurate and aggressive with his irons, Westwood has the weapons to challenge again this year. His weakness is a one-dimensional short game, but working with Mark Roe has improved his skill levels and he now looks much more confidence in and around the greens. But, in contrast to a hugely consistent 2008, the Englishman heads to New York with no real recent form to speak of. His last top-10 finish came at the Johnnie Walker Classic back in February and since finishing 43rd at The Masters he has done no better than a tie for 27th at the European Open at the end of May.
