In one sense Westwood could not be coming into this major in a better position. His major form? Superb - each of his last three starts has resulted in a top-three finish. The last time this event was held at Pebble Beach? He finished tied fifth. His last start in a major in California? He was third in the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. His form? Excellent: second at Augusta (beaten only by an inspired Phil Mickelson), fourth at the Players' Championship and eighth at the BMW PGA Championship. Basically we can conclude that he is doing everything he possibly could do to prove he is a great player. Except win. Of course no-one will understand this more readily than Westwood himself. The question is how long he can remain patient while the returns are less than he deserves, the pressure mounts and the questions keep coming. It is a horrible situation and one that can only get worse without a win. He may deserve to win a major but that doesn't mean he will do.
