Having broken his major duck when taking the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, Harrington quickly gained a reputation for being one of the fiercest competitors on the back nine of the big four championships. Within 13 months of that first major title he had completed his third win in just six starts. His back nine 'stare' was a visible indication of his ability to find the zone when it truly mattered. But since winning the 2008 PGA Championship, Harrington has faltered. First he failed to inherit the Colin Montgomerie mantle as team leader in the Ryder Cup and then he has struggled to find third gear in any event of any standard. He hasn't made the top ten in any event since January and announced last week that he has abandoned the swing change he has been working on for the last six months. Only Vijay Singh trains harder than the Irishman - and Harrington has the advantage in that he practices his putting in addition to his long game. But whether he can find his game this week having struggled for so long is debatable.
