It might have taken him some time to finally win a major but now that he has four to his name, Mickelson knows that his legacy will be defined by his performances in the grand slam events. And unless he adds a US Open title he will consider his career unfulfilled because four times he has finished second in the event. Twelve months ago his defeat was agonisingly emotional as he sought to win for his wife Amy who, weeks earlier, had been diagnosed with cancer. Four years ago his defeat was sensational in all the wrong ways, as he imploded on the final hole. He later said: "I am still in shock I did that. I just can't believe I did that. I am such an idiot." He continues to receive criticism for his perceived wild streak on the course, but he also possesses supreme talent, more than enough to win this event if he can rein the wildness in. Three times he has won the AT&T National Pro-am at Pebble Beach so he knows the course and there is a chance he could usurp Tiger Woods as the world's number one with a win.
