What to make of Sergio? He's had a seemingly never-ending list of major near misses and that includes his performance here at Bethpage Black in 2002 when he was paired with Tiger in the final group but, not for the first time, wilted. After rising up to second in the rankings in 2008 he actually had a chance to surpass Woods as world number one this year but he's been under a cloud for much of 2009 - mainly due to his split with Greg Norman's daughter - and his putting looked woeful in Memphis last week when he missed the cut. He also has a bit of history with the local fans after an obscene gesture he made in 2002 after they were getting on his back. At his best, he's a world class player with the ability to win a US Open and multiple majors but it's just not happening for him at the moment and this tournament is relentless in exposing any mental weaknesses. He's missed the cut in two of his last three US Opens so a weekend exit would hardly come as a big surprise. A major will surely come his way at some point but the signs don't look good for this week.
