Twice a former winner of the event (at Oakmont in 1994 and Congressional in 1997) Els it would seem Els ought to be somewhere in your thinking when the US Open swings around. But you have to wonder if Els is a beaten man in the Majors - ever since failing to hole the winning putt in the 2004 Open at Troon the shoulders have appeared a little slumped. He still talks a good game and on his website insists, "I'm playing great from tee to green. That tells me my golf swing is right where I want it to be. And that's how it feels, too. I feel much more confident. Okay, I'm not making the putts, but to be honest, I can really see a way forward now on the greens. I just have to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm right there." But you begin to wonder if even he believes it with the results not really reflecting his confidence. The Big Easy only has one win in America over the past five years and only three top-10 finishes this season. He did give himself a welcome boost as he tied for eighth at the Memorial in his last outing before the Bethpage Black, but the feeling remains his major-winning days could well be behind him.
