Cabrera's win at the US Open in 2007 seemed to come out of nowhere. How could a player known for length not accuracy win a US Open, asked the pundits although the Argentine had always enjoyed this tournament. Prior to his victory he had made all seven of his previous US Open cuts and his results included a seventh at Southern Hills in 2001 and a 16th at brutal Shinnecock Hills in 2004. However, that run ended in emphatic style at Torrey Pines last year when the defending champion crashed out at the halfway point after rounds of 79 and 76. Indeed, there was a feeling his maiden major triumph at Oakmont was his moment in the sun, he did very little in 2008, missing cuts regularly and carding a couple of rounds in the 80s. His record in the early part of 2009 did little to inspire confidence either and he headed to Augusta in April on the back of two further missed cuts. But Cabrera is a player who seems to thrive on the biggest stage and the unflappable Argentine held his nerve to edge out Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a dramatic play-off to clinch a second major crown. What will we get at Bethpage Black? It remains hard to say, Cabrera is nothing if not unpredictable, but if he clicks into gear again 'El Pato' has proved he has the game and temperament to get the job done.
