For a nation that is so proud of churning out physically strong and mentally tough sportsmen, Australia's golfers have proved themselves a curiously brittle bunch in the heat of major championship battle. Greg Norman famously under-achieved in the big events and in recent years Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby and Aaron Baddeley have also struggled. Which makes Geoff Ogilvy's rise all the more admirable. At the start of 2006 he was widely dismissed as a talented choker, but something clicked and before anyone knew it he was displaying the rare ability to remain icy cool under the strongest pressure. He won the 2006 US Open, staying calm and composed as the leading contenders folded in all sorts of extraordinary and bizarre manners. It was actually the culmination of 12 months of growing maturity in the big events that initially bore fruit at the 2006 WGC World Matchplay. Since those wins three years ago he has added the 2008 WGC CA Championship and this year's WGC World Matchplay, proving once again his ability to peak for the big occasion. Only a fool would now dismiss his chances in any big event and his third round 63 at the Memorial two weeks ago hints at some good form.
