Simply sensational in 2009, McIlroy's meteoric rise into the world's top 20 has proved that the hype was justified - the Northern Irish teenager is the real deal. After three top-10 finishes in the early part of the season, McIlroy clinched a first European Tour title in Dubai and followed it up by reaching the quarter-finals at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship - his first World Golf Championship event and also his first professional outing on American soil. He went on to post four consecutive top-20 finishes Stateside including at The Masters when things could and should have been even better but for a scruffy finish to his second round. McIlroy admitted that his exploits in America had left him rather jaded and it showed as he subsequently went on to finish well down in the field at the Verizon Heritage before missing the cut altogether in the Players Championship. The lull continued when he could do no better than 50th at the Irish Open on home soil in May, but McIlroy has since allayed fears over his form with a top-five finish at the European Tour's flagship event - the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth - and a solid showing at the European Open. Will make his US Open debut this week and while it may be unrealistic to expect the youngster to win at the first time of asking, it would be no great surprise if he were to challenge.
