When he won the Transitions Championship in March, his first PGA Tour win since 2007, Furyk had to enter the Masters equation because although he lacks some of the characteristics deemed essential at Augusta (length from the tee being the major one) he has other qualities in abundance: patience, the ability to craft his way around 18 tough holes and a short-game that is under-rated for its imagination. He finished fourth at Augusta in 1998 and 2003 so we know he can play the course and he proved when winning the US Open in 2004 that he can conquer a major championship. The key to his week will be the delicate balance between his positives and negatives: will a grinding top ten finish be the best he can manage, hindered by that lack of length? Or will he find something special this week?
