Twelve months ago there was high excitement in Ireland as Harrington, already holder of the previous year's Open and PGA Championships, embarked on a quest for a "Paddy Slam". But by the standards of the 2007 and 2008 majors, 2009 was a serious letdown only somewhat redeemed by contending in the PGA Championship (before finding water in the final round and going backwards). Having spent two years celebrating Harrington's work ethic, critics spent 2009 suggesting it was the cause for his decline - he was apparently over-analytical, over-complex and over-obsessive. He always was those things but when he wins, they are deemed positive attributes. Third and eighth in his last two starts, and a top five finisher at Augusta in the past, if Harrington rediscovers his 'back nine stare' (the secret of his success in 2007 and 08) he can be a contender again.
