What to make of the enigma that is Phil Mickelson? His form in 2009 is like his career in microcosm. The year began with talk from his camp that Phil had worked hard over the winter and was excited about the future. He then bombed on his first three outings and looked anything but ready. Cue victory at the Northern Trust Open when he veered wildly from the brilliant to the downright awful. Two weeks later he was consistently superb when winning his first WGC event, the CA Championship at Doral. After that win he said: "I can't be any more excited. As well as I'm driving it, to be hitting it as high and far as I'm hitting it, with my short game being as good as it's ever been, I can't wait for Augusta to get here." And no-one can doubt his record amongst the dogwood and azalea: two wins and another nine top tens from his last 14 starts. This really could be the year when he adds a third green jacket to his wardrobe.
