Woods leads wildcard poll

Wildcard Tiger tipped to top score

Last updated: 9th September 2010

  • Woods: leads poll

Almost half of skysports.com voters believe Tiger Woods will justify his Ryder Cup selection by outscoring his fellow wildcard picks at Celtic Manor.

Woods, who has endured a turbulent year after revelations about his private life were made public, had to rely on a wildcard pick from US captain Corey Pavin to participate.

But Tiger's tough time has not deterred 48.8 per cent of readers in believing he can outscore Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler over the three days.

He'll have to improve his Ryder Cup record to do so; it is a record which is not befitting of a player who has spent the past 273 weeks at the summit of the world rankings.

Woods has lost 13 of his 25 matches at the Ryder Cup - 12 of those coming when teamed with a compatriot in foursomes and fourballs. The 14-time Major winner will be hoping to pair up with good friends Bubba Watson or Dustin Johnson for this year's foursomes and fourballs to improve that record.

Both Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson enjoy moderate backing from voters, garnering 21.8 per cent and 18.3 per cent of the vote respectively. Open winner Cink has endured a torrid time at the Ryder Cup with only three wins out of 15, while Zach Johnson's first Ryder Cup in 2008 brought him just one win. Both Cink and Zach Johnson have found form recently however; Cink has enjoyed recent top 20 finishes, while Johnson was tied 3rd in this year's PGA Championship and shot an opening day 63 at the Deutsche Bank.

Only 11.2 per cent believe surprise inclusion Rickie Fowler will top score, something which is reflected by Sky Bet, who have the youngster at 14/1 to acquire the most points for the US team. The firm also agree with skysports.com readers by making Woods 5/1 favourite overall, while Cink is 12/1 and Zach Johnson is 14/1. Phil Mickleson, who will equal the all-time US Ryder Cup appearance record with his eighth, is 13/2.

The US team are 6/4 to win the Ryder Cup outright, while their European counterparts are 8/11. The tie is 10/1.
