Woods no good

Woods could be more harm than good, says Oosterhuis

  • Woods: has divided opinion

Sky Sports golf expert Peter Oosterhuis says that he would not pick Tiger Woods if he were captain of the USA Ryder Cup team.

The World Number One has struggled for form in recent months and only made the team after captain Corey Pavin picked him as a Wildcard.

Oosterhuis believes that Woods could cause problems for the team.

"You start reading about some of things that have happened with Tiger playing in the Ryder Cup before and he hasn't fitted in with the team very well at all," Oosterhuis told Sky Sports News.

"I have my doubts about how he will fit in on the team this year.

"He should be leading the team and inspiring the team. They should be saying 'I've got Tiger on my Ryder Cup team, we're going to demolish the opposition,' and that hasn't happened."

Oosterhuis went on to say that the effect Tiger could have on the side would damage, rather than help, his teammates.

Woods has underperformed in previous Ryder Cup tournaments despite huge success on the PGA Tour.

"It is not so much about how he will play, it's the affect he will have on the team," Oosterhuis said.

"I don't think he's going to help the team. I think he's just going to muddy the waters and cause problems that they don't need.

"They need to be thinking about golf and saying 'Hey, we're a team, we're playing together and we want to beat the opposition and let's not have any static on the side."

Competitor

But former World No 1 Greg Norman opposed Oosterhuis' view, saying: "How could you not put him (Woods) on the team?

"If you had to make a six-footer on the 18th green on a Sunday afternoon for the USA to win the Ryder Cup, who would you pick? It would be Tiger Woods. He's made more six-footers to win Championships than any other player on that team.

"The other thing too is that Tiger Woods is starting to play better. Two weeks ago he said 'look, don't pick me, I'm not playing well enough'. Yesterday he said 'I want to be on the Ryder Cup team'.

"So he knows exactly where he is. He's a competitor. He wants to play for his country and he wasn't picked it would be a bigger shock, I would say.

"Whatever happened in the past off the golf course is nobody's business right now, it's all going to be focused on how they get the best golf out of this team in Ryder Cup week.

"You can't second-guess Corey Pavin. He's made the right choice as far as I am concerned and the team will rally around everybody."

Chris Maitland says...

Totally agree with Norman, how can you not pick Tiger. You''d be mad not to take him. It''s all getting very tiresome the way the media is trying to bring down the greatest golfer of the last 10yrs. It speaks volumes how little Tiger has played in the last 2 years and is still World No.1.
